At the behest of my book club, I read the certified chronically online queer person classic The Foxhole Court, first in a trilogy. This is about a guy named Neil who gets violently recruited to join a confusingly popular made-up sport team for a university in North Carolina. He’s on the run from the mafia but his real dream is to play exy, which is like violent lacrosse played inside and somehow garners 60k people watching it live on campus.
This is edgelord book supreme. The writing, not good. The characters? Also not good. The point is they’re all like traumatized fucked-up misfits that have to play for a college sport team? The gang’s all here: mafia runaway boy, mafia runaway boy 2, deeply unwell and genuinely psychotic small goalie man, goalie man identical twin, horny gay guy, obligatory person of color who is a girl and the captain, Christian girl, and rich girl. Neil is spend being violently bullied and assaulted, primarily by Violent Goalie Man Andrew but he’s like whatever it’s better than what the mafia would do to me if they found me. Good thing I’m going to go on NATIONAL TELEVISION with a little HAIR DYE and call it fucking good. Be so for real.
Also, this book was published in 2013, but the number of types of abelist slurs in here was giving 2008 maximum.
I do not recommend one check this out. After hearing the buzz about this series for so long, I’m baffled that this is the thing that the people are obsessed with. Like I didn’t expect it to be good but I thought it might’ve entertaining. Either way. I guess I’ll read the other books if book club wants me to.
