This absolute lunker of a romantasy takes place in dubiously early 1900s New Orleans where paranormal creatures like ghosts and devils are real and interact with the public. Ophelia Grimm inherits her mother’s necromancy powers when her mother suddenly drops dead. Also then she has to follow her precocious younger sister into a demon hell mansion called Phantasma (and not Phasmophobia but I kept calling it that) where if you get through the nine circles of trials you get a wish from the devil himself. Ooooh. Good thing Ophelia is one of the most deliberately obtuse stubborn stupid FMC I have had the displeasure to read about.

When she gets into the mansion she keeps being approached by a ooooh handsome ghost who offers to help her win the challenges if she frees him from being trapped in the mansion. After some level of drama and fuckery Ophelia agrees. This is good for our girl, right?

Once the dam is broken on the hooking up between little miss necromancer and the smizing phantom it’s a fuckfest the rest of the book. Genuinely could’ve knocked 200 pages of sucking and fucking out. And listen it’s a romantasy I’m genre aware but JESUS. We are losing the plot here Ophelia!!!! Even the guy is like um girl what about finding my way out and the horrors and your undiagnosed OCD? But no!! And god forbid there’s a line of eager Devils waiting to fingerblast her into the next millennium if she wants. Because they all have extremely modern therapist speak levels of consent negotiation!!

Anyway fuck. I can’t even get into it all lol. I’m not built for romantasy I just get pissed off. 3/5 stars. Read it if you want but it’s like 500 pages and the ending was a flop for me. FUCK
