Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl

Excited to finish reading this very queer book partially set in the Bay Area on the first day of Pride and before I am briefly set in the Bay Area! Best description of an orgasm:”… building to a violent universal bang” Worst description of an orgasm: “Dave squirted yellowish mucus onto Paul’s lip and chin”…

Exactly what it feels like when you see someone you hope to love: “And then Robin walked in and the brass section blew its bold angelic chorus, a great unseen remote changed the channel of the universe.”

And something else I just liked: “Jane experienced a feeling to which she attached first the word abundance, then the word plenitude, and she considered how this might indeed be the best of all possible worlds.”

Extremely weird, extremely snappily written book. Not terribly long but took me two weeks to chew through. Lots of references to bicycles which only increase with our protagonist’s proximity to San Francisco. Every corner of queer experience is touched on here but an especially interesting read for thinking about gender and desirability.

This is one of those classic gender fuckery books that I always see recommended but have never gotten around to. I’ll def check it out, the horrible cum descriptions enchant me.

Yay! I really enjoyed it. I had never heard of it and didn’t know anything going in except the back cover + the “bookshop recommendation” notecard + several sentences I read on a random page and it definitely made me think I was getting into more of a lighthearted romp than it was. Thankful for what it was but I would definitely also read the silly version.
