I had the misfortune of continuing to read the second book in a series that I thought was supposed to be a duology but has the suspicious makings of an extension. I read the first one as a true hate read. I hated the concept (Draco/Hermione fanfiction with the serial numbers field off) I hated the writing (overwritten purple prose slop with Chronically Online Capitalizations and Too Much Dick Shit and Ball Humor) and, like a true hater, I loathed the clout it was getting online.
I didn’t like the first book. I did read the second one because let it never be said I don’t commit to the bit. The second book was more tolerable on the “humor” front because it was more serious overall in tone. The prose got, somehow, even more overwritten. I think the author should pivot to writing period piece bodice rippers if she wants to continue writing in that fashion. Though I suppose fanfiction romantasy is the modern woman’s bodice ripper. Speaking of, the romance I gave not one hoot about, but I suppose I do respect they were given actual complications to try and overcome with their competing backgrounds versus like “he was rude to me once” type of enemies to lover bullshit.
The magic world was a bit interesting, but unfortunately difficult for me to get past the Parry Hotter of it all that can be seen clearly in the entire bones.
Do I recommend it? No. Would I read another book of it came out? Also no. I would consider reading a book this author would put out in the future if it could be promised not to be based on a romance between a wizard fascist and the woman he calls slurs, but with her background and the commercial success of her current books I don’t see that future.
